The Cape Insider started as a shared note between friends who were tired of watching visitors eat badly, queue pointlessly and leave without meeting the actual city. The note grew. This is it.
Cape Town doesn't need another list of the top ten things to do. It needs a friend who lives here, answers honestly, and tells you when the wind is about to ruin your plans.
We are a small, independent team of writers, cooks, hikers and swimmers who happen to share a city with one of the natural wonders of the world. Everything on this site is researched on foot, paid for from our own pockets, and rewritten every time the city changes its mind — which it does, often.
The name is a promise. An insider is not someone who knows a secret; it's someone who belongs somewhere and is willing to share it properly — with context, with care, and with the community that makes it worth visiting in the first place.
What we stand on
Four principles, zero exceptions
We pay our own bills
No sponsored listings, no comped meals in exchange for coverage, no affiliate links dressed up as advice. If a place is on the site, it's because we'd take our own mother there.
We go back before we write
One great night can be luck. Every recommendation has been visited at least twice, in different seasons, because Cape Town in a February southeaster and Cape Town in July rain are different cities.
We name the hard parts
The wind, the water, the inequality you will see and should not look away from. An honest guide to this city includes the things the brochures leave out.
Locals first, always
The best of Cape Town is its people. We send readers to family-run kitchens, resident-led tours and neighbourhood shops — the places where your money stays in the community it visits.
