Table Mountain before the cableway wakes
Climb Platteklip Gorge in the dark and watch dawn hit the city bowl from the summit plateau.
Start at 4:30am with a headlamp. The gorge is a stone staircase — brutal, direct, safe in numbers. At the top, walk ten minutes west to the upper cable station viewpoint, unpack your flask, and watch Cape Town switch its lights off as the sun climbs out of the Hottentots Holland. Ride the first cable car down for free-ish knees.

Chapman's Peak at golden hour
Nine kilometres and 114 curves carved into a cliff face between Hout Bay and Noordhoek.
Drive it south to north in the late afternoon so the ocean stays on your left and the sun ahead. Pull into the viewpoint bays — the picnic spot above Noordhoek beach is the one for sundowners. Combine with fish and chips on the Hout Bay harbour and a walk on Noordhoek's endless white sand.

Cape Point & the Boulders penguins
The old lighthouse at the end of the peninsula, then African penguins at swimming distance.
Do Cape Point first, before the buses: walk from the funicular to the old lighthouse, then take the quieter path toward the Cape of Good Hope beach. Loop back via Simon's Town for lunch and Boulders Beach — swim at adjacent Windmill Beach where penguins paddle past for free. Baboons are real; keep food sealed and doors locked.

Stellenbosch and Franschhoek's oak-lined streets, Cape Dutch farms and world-class cellars, 45 minutes from town.
Pick three farms, no more. Start with a morning tasting somewhere small in the Banhoek valley, do a long lunch on a werf under 300-year-old oaks, and end with MCC bubbles as the light goes gold on the Simonsberg. Book a driver or the Franschhoek Wine Tram and let the day blur properly.

Gentle, endless waves in front of the famous painted beach huts — the best beginner break in the country.
Surf Emporium or Gary's will have you standing in your first lesson. False Bay runs several degrees warmer than the Atlantic side, the beach break is forgiving, and the post-surf coffee scene on Beach Road is its own reward. Go early morning before the southeaster wakes up.

Kirstenbosch is arguably the world's most beautiful botanical garden any day; on summer Sunday evenings it adds live music. Arrive when gates open, claim lawn near the top for the view, and walk the Boomslang canopy bridge before the opening act. Tickets sell out — book the moment the season lineup drops.
